RE: 3000W Chinese Gensets Info.

Fired up the little 1500 watter, it ran good, tried air conditioning fan, it worked, TV it worked, microwave (900w) it didn't. The front panel of the MW went crazy, but luckilly it still worked when I went back to shore power. I did notice that the light inside the mw flickered when genny was running, mw was not on and door was open. Do I need to plug mw directly into genny to get it to work? Is coverter/battery charging taking up too much power?

RE: RT bettery shelf

I installed mudflaps behind the rear wheels. The flaps are 12" wide and go all the way into the frame. I have found that this has reduced the dirt and grit by 90% in the battery tray. Like others have said, you have to maintain the battery and tray by pulling it out once in a while. I spray the slides with Aero Kroil (like WD40 but 100% better) and the connections. This setup has worked great. The mudflap is bolted to a piece of slotted angled steel attached to the frame by a self-tapping sheet metal screw and I use the existing bolt holding the removable cover to the fender to attach the flap to the fender.

RE: 3000W Chinese Gensets Info.

To professor95, whilst reading the manual for the 42412, it says it shouldn't be used for charging deep cycle batteries, that true?

RE: 3000W Chinese Gensets Info.

Following the the perfessor's advice, I walked into a local Schucks last nite, and bought a Champion 42412 for $199. Those of you who have a 42412, what RV appliances are you able to run with it? We mainly got it to keep our 2 6volt batteries charged while drycamping. (I'm assuming it will charge batteries)? Larry 2005 Roadtrek 170 2006 Rainier travel trailer 1965 Chevy Van 2008 HHR

RE: LEAKY PROPANE LINES?

I thought about removing the bumper too but it's covered with the custom ground effects plastic. The Class V trailer hitch was also in the way. Dropping the tank wasn't that bad, even though it was full of propane. I used a rolling hydraulic jack and built a little cradle to keep the tank from slipping off the little round jack thingy.

RE: LEAKY PROPANE LINES?

Dropped the tank (fairly easy to do) found out that it was the regulator for the barbeque hook up line. Never used the durn thing, so took it off and plugged the hole. thanks for the responses folks.

RE: LEAKY PROPANE LINES?

thanks Rodger for the responses, I am pretty sure it is the regulator (or one of the fittings, so I'm gonna drop the tank (very carefully).

LEAKY PROPANE LINES?

Anybody had trouble with a big, loud leak near the propane tank on an 05 RT 170? When I open the main valve, I immediately hear (and smell) propane leaking (sounds like a leak out of a tire). At first I thought it was the little valve that is opened while the propane tank is being filled, but it was closed. Then I thought it might be the hose hanging there for a barbeque, but nothing comes out. So now it seems it might be the main regulator, but I can barely see it let alone get my hand in there. My guess is I'm going to have to drop the whole tank just to figure out what's going on? anybody done that? Larry in Blaine

RE: Roadtrek 170 Popular - Mileage

yep, the numbers listed here are right on, in addition, we tow a 20' TT with our 05 RT 170 and get anywhere from 11 to 13 mpg, which is fantastic for a 7500 lb tow vehicle. We got over 17 mph (solo) on a trip thru Nevada at over 80 mph. I'm guessing we might get up to 19 highway going 60-65 driving ultra conservative.

RE: Chains on a Roadtrek?

don't have a 190 or 210, have an o5 170, manual says don't use chains, tried it anyway, chains banged around inside wheel well, could only go 20 mph, semi's about ran us over, took chains off, found out really didn't need 'em as RT is so heavy had no traction problems. btw, they don't seem to make cable chains for Light truck tires, I couldn't find any, had to by regular old chains.

RE: Downsizing

when we were unloading our 30' Arctic Fox TT to trade it in for our 05RT170, we couldn't believe the amount of junk we were carrying around, half of which we didn't know we had, 90% of which we didn't want and 95% of which we didn't need. It's very liberating to downsize and free yourself from "stuff." Even then, we loaded the RT with what we thought we would need, and are still weeding out excess "stuff" three years later. downsize and lose weight! Ever been shopping and just had to "go" but no restrooms? just head out to the B. When we're shopping and I get grumpy, she just sends me out to the B for a nap (paradise)!

RE: Not a tornado chaser

I'm from eastern Kansas, so I've seen a tornado or two, never been hit by one, never worried about 'em either. It's actually really exciting when the weather gets violent, I love thunderstorms, tornados, etc. In the 1950's, there wasn't a weather channel to warn us, but we could just tell when one might be coming and we were smart enough to take cover, all by ourselves. Today, you will be told what to do by perky radio & TV personalities who hope your town will be wiped out so they will have something to report about instead of rain and fog. Of course their trucks and cameras get in the way of cleanup.

RE: age of rv restriction

For many years we had kind of an opposite problem, our TT was new but the tow vehicle was a very nice condition 1965 Chevy Van. Never were refused admission to an any RV park (including Newport Beach CA), in fact we always had lots of curious onlookers who wanted to know how it could tow a trailer (big block 292 6 cyl).

RE: One for the Enviromentalists

I used to think the more cubes the better. But, between '88 and '08 there have been tremendous advances in engine efficiency. Had an 88 Suburban 454 that we towed with and it got 8-9 mpg solo or towing. In '05 I saw the coming gas crisis coming and traded the Sub and an Arctic Fox TT in on an '05 Roadtrek 170 with the 6.0 engine. The 6.0 (364 ci) is much more powerful than the old 454 and gets up to 17 mpg solo, and the Trek weighs 7500 lbs dry (I weighed it). We also tow a 20' TT when it rains and we get 11-13 with the 364. The tow/haul setting on the transmission works wonders too. Amazing.

RE: Chevy 1500 5.3 or 6.0

We have an 05 Roadtrek 170 which is a little motorhome based on the 3/4 ton chevy express van with 6.0 engine and 3.73 gears. It weighs 7500 lbs dry, yet we get up to 17 mpg solo, 14-15 in town and 10-13 towing. We occasionally tow a 4100 lb 20' Rainier TT and have never got below 10 mpg (headwind), and usually get 13, even going over Stevens Pass here in Washington. I really surprised to read that some of your light pick-up 6.0 Silverados only get 10 mpg solo, or even less than 15. I do agree with old guy, stay with a Chevy,

RE: Diesel vs gas......................

just never liked the noise or smell of diesels. I know how to maintain and work on gas engines and I'm too old to even care about learning to work on or maintain a diesel. (aren't all you dieselers glad that old Rudolf's last name wasn't Lilly or Pansey, or something like that).

RE: hitch ball height

yeah, the ones with several bolt holes to set the height. First thing I do with a new rig is find a level parking lot, Back the TV up to the TT but don't couple it. make sure both vehicles are completely level, then insert the hitch & bar in the TV and adjust the ball height so it will fit all the way into the trailer tongue, still keeping things level as possible. (I like the ball to be just slightly higher than the trailer tongue. The when you hitch up, the TT will make the TV squat, and then use the spring bars to bring it all level again. I think your initial hitch adjustment might be off. (I've had about a dozen different trailers over the past 20 years and that's they way I've set them all up and haven't lost one yet, and most of them tracked just fine, except two Arctic Foxes that I couldn't get to stay quiet behind the TV no matter what I tried). Tilting the head back is for fine-tuning the set up, not solving major problems. I usually have my hitch ball slightly tilted back.
